Crosswinds: The Courageous Life of Cornelia Fort Crosswinds is the result of extensive research into the remarkable life of Cornelia Fort, the first woman pilot to die in service of her country. Before her U.S. Army Air Forces career, Cornelia was a civilian flight instructor. She was in the air over Honolulu with a student, a defense worker, on Dec. 7, 1941 as the Pearl Harbor attack began. At 7:55 a.m., she came nose to nose with a Japanese Zero airplane, evading its attack in her small Interstate Cadet training airplane and landing safely back at John Rodgers airport. She likely was the first, or one of the first, civilians to recognize Pearl Harbor was under attack.
